Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup elbow macaroni
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup panko bread crumbs
  • Vegetable oil for spraying

Instructions

  1. Cook elbow macaroni according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Whisk in flour for about 2 minutes to form a roux.
  3. Gradually add milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Mix in garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper; simmer until slightly thickened (3-4 minutes).
  4. Stir in cheeses until melted into a smooth sauce.
  5. Fold cooked macaroni into the cheese sauce and cool for about 20 minutes.
  6. Shape the mixture into balls and place on a parchment-lined sheet.
  7. For coating: Beat an egg in one dish; mix breadcrumbs in another. Roll each ball first in egg, then coat with breadcrumbs.
  8. Spray each ball lightly with vegetable oil and air fry at 375°F (190°C) for about 8-10 minutes or until golden brown.
